Post-Friday clashes in Kashmir against Kupwara civilian killing

Srinagar, April 28:(GNS) Day after a civilian was killed in army firing at Panzgam in Kupwara district, clashes broke out in several parts of Kashmir Valley on Friday after prayers against the killing.
Civilian identified as Muhammad Yousuf, 70, was killed after army opened fire on protesters seeking body of two Pakistani Fidayeen attackers who stormed army camp at Panzgam in Kupwara district and killed three soldiers including two officers. The locals termed the firing of army ‘unprovoked’.
After Friday prayers, locals defying restrictions at Trehgam and Kralpora took to streets and clashed with government forces. The locals shouted pro-freedom and anti-India protests. Police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the protesters. There was complete shutdown amid restrictions in Sogam, Trehgam, Lolab, Lalpora and other adjoining areas.
Pertinently, Fidayeen attackers in a pre-dawn raid stormed an army base in Chowkibal area of frontier Kupwara and killed two officers and one trooper. The slain include a Captain and a Junior Commissioned Officer.
The clashes after Friday prayers also broke out between protesters and government forces at Nowhatta in Old City, Sopore in Baramulla district and Pulwama in south Kashmir. Police used smoke shells against the protesters. One journalist was injured at Nowhatta in Srinagar.
