PM, European Council head discuss Afghanistan developments

New Delhi, Aug 31 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke on the phone with President of the European Council, Charles Michel, during which the two leaders discussed the recent developments in Afghanistan and the implications for the region and the world.

The two leaders unequivocally condemned the horrific terror attack at the Kabul International Airport on August 26 that resulted in many casualties, said an official statement.

“They emphasized the importance of a stable and secure Afghanistan and discussed the potential role India and the EU could play in this context,” it said.

“The two leaders agreed to remain in touch on bilateral and global issues, in particular, the situation in Afghanistan.”

The President of the EU Council, on his twitter account, said that the two leaders discussed the Afghanistan situation.

“With @narendramodi exchanged over the situation in #Afghanistan. Working together to counter terrorism, deliver humanitarian aid and hold any future government accountable for meeting its international commitments. Broad international consensus on the response will be key,” he posted.

The European Council defines the European Union’s overall political direction and priorities. It sets the EU’s policy agenda.

The members of the European Council are the heads of state or government of the 27 EU member states, the European Council President and the President of the European Commission.
