Leh, June 6: According to sources, the Ladakh traffic police collected more than Rs 1.50 crore in fines for rule infractions until the end of April, after which the authorities initiated a traffic rule enforcement operation ahead of the tourist season.
According to a traffic police officer, the traffic authorities have collected a fine of Rs 1,57,25,750 for various traffic infractions through the end of April 2022.
In the last three days, 761 traffic challans were issued, with a fine of Rs 2,82,000 collected from violators, he added.
In the Leh and Kargil districts, the traffic police conducted a special drive against rule infractions like as overspeeding, risky driving, driving without a licence, and improper parking on May 28.
Special checkpoints have been set up at various locations, including the Kargil-Drass route, the Kargil-Sankoo road, the Kargil-Leh road, the Leh-Nubra road, the Leh-Upshi road, and the Leh-Kargil road, according to officials.
For improved implementation and enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Act, traffic officials have also introduced contemporary traffic devices such as speed radar guns and Alcometers (MVA).
“Given the increase in motor transport vehicles during the impending tourist season, the enforcement drive against traffic offences has been enhanced,” the officer said.
Special drives will be conducted against drunk driving, road rage, off-road driving, unsafe driving, and the use of high-beam lights, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Traffic Mohd Rafi Giri.
